No Image on Projector
Troubleshooting guide for projector showing no image from ICATS system.
If your projector powers on but shows no image from the ICATS system, follow these troubleshooting steps in order.
Symptoms
- No signal or blank screen
- Projector shows "No signal" or "No input" message
- ICATS system appears to be running but no image on projector
- Image appears briefly then disappears
Step 1: Check projector power
- Confirm that the outlet has power (not a switched outlet)
- Verify that the projector power cord is firmly connected at both ends
- Remove the projector lens cap
- Turn on the projector
Step 2: Check HDMI Connection
Confirm that the HDMI cable is:
- Securely connected to Raspberry Pi
- Securely connected to projector
- Not damaged or kinked
Tip: HDMI cables can fail. If possible, test with a known-good HDMI cable to rule out cable issues.
Step 3: Verify Projector Input and Background Color
Ensure the projector is set to the correct HDMI input:
- Check projector remote for "Input" or "Source" button
- Cycle through inputs until you find the correct HDMI port
- Verify you're using HDMI 1, HDMI 2, etc. (some projectors have multiple HDMI ports)
- Check projector menu settings for background color set to black. Should be set to white.
Step 4: Check Power Supply
Verify the ICATS system is receiving adequate power:
- Power supply is connected to Raspberry Pi
- Power supply is connected to wall outlet (not a switched outlet)
- Power supply is correct (5V, minimum 3A)
- Raspberry Pi shows power indicator (LED light)
Important: Using an incorrect power supply can cause display issues. Verify you're using the included power supply or one that meets specifications (5V, 3A minimum).
Step 5: Verify Projector Compatibility
Ensure your projector meets ICATS requirements:
- HDMI input: Required
- Throw ratio: 0.5 to 1.0 (short throw recommended)
- Resolution: 1920x1080 (1080p) recommended.
- Brightness: 4000+ lumens recommended
See the Requirements page for complete specifications.
Step 6: Test with Another Device
To isolate the issue, test your projector with another device:
- Connect to a monitor, TV or another projector via HDMI
- If other device works, issue is not likely with ICATS system or connections
- If other device also doesn't work, issue is likely with ICATS
Step 7: Check ICATS System Status
Verify the ICATS system is running correctly:
- Connect ICATS to a monitor or TV temporarily (if possible)
- Verify system boots and shows ICATS interface
- If system doesn't boot, see Raspberry Pi Won't Boot.
